Habitat for Humanity
About Habitat
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry with the goal of eliminating poverty housing. Unwilling to accept the fact that thousands of families live without adequate shelter, Habitat challenges and invites individuals, religious organizations of all faiths, companies, foundations, and other organizations to join in partnership with people living in inadequate housing to improve their conditions. Habitat works through volunteer labor, management expertise, and tax deductible donations of money and materials. Homes are sold to partner families at no profit and with no-interest mortgages. Habitat is not a giveaway program, but is rather a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing are involved in the work.
Habitat selects families based on their economic need and the inadequacy of their present housing. They must prove their ability to meet a monthly mortgage payment and must commit to entering into a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. There is a long process to approve a home owner.
![]() Volunteering We are currently serving with Habitat for Humanity to get people to help out for a day. West Shore isn't affiliated with Habitat at all; we do not make any decisions regarding their operations. However, we are working to get West Shore involved in helping out the community.
No construction skills are needed when volunteering, although experience with basic hand tools is a plus. If you are interested in serving, watch for trips to be advertised in the bulletin on Sundays, and come sign up. We will be creating group trips on Saturdays (and maybe trips on other days if the availability arises), which will be announced on this page. However, we don't want you to assume you have to do it through our group, and if you are interested in volunteering, call one of the numbers below: Harrisburg Area: 717-545-7299 Cumberland Valley: 717-249-1338 http://www.habitat.org/ We volunteer for both the Harrisburg Area and the Cumberland Valley Habitat for Humanity chapters. By serving both, we are reaching out to the community as a whole, and are looking to expand that reach possibly in the future. Upcoming Events
Stay tuned for more events coming up in the spring; these events will be listed on this page as they happen.
